RON MUECK EXHIBITION • FONDATION CARTIER, PARIS

RON MUECK 1

From the 16th of April at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain Paris.

Ron Mueck has been invited to present his new sculpture at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, this is his first major exhibition in Europe since the very successful exhibition back in 2005 still at the Fondation Cartier.
In addition to six important recent sculptures the show includes three produced especially for this event. A new film recording their creation has been made for the occasion by Gautier Deblonde. Revealing the reclusive artist at work further emphasizes the sensitivity and power of Ron Mueck’s sculpture and highlights its particular resonance for our time.

LICHTENSTEIN: A RETROSPECTIVE
Tate Modern Museum London: Exhibition • 21 February – 27 May 2013

Tate Modern is proud to present a retrospective of one of the great American artists of the twentieth century.
Lichtenstein: A Retrospective is the first full-scale retrospective of this important artist in over twenty years. Co-organised by The Art Institute of Chicago and Tate Modern, this momentous show brings together 125 of his most definitive paintings and sculptures and will reassess his enduring legacy.
Lichtenstein is renowned for his works based on comic strips and advertising imagery, coloured with his signature hand-painted Benday dots. The exhibition showcases such key paintings as Look Mickey 1961 lent from the National Gallery Art, Washington and his monumental Artist’s Studio series of 1973–4. Other noteworthy highlights include Whaam! 1963 – a signature work in Tate’s collection – and Drowning Girl 1963 on loan from the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
The artist’s rich and expansive practice will be represented by a wide range of materials, including paintings on Rowlux and steel, as well sculptures in ceramic and brass and a selection of previously unseen drawings, collages and works of paper.
Room after room will pay tribute to his extraordinary oeuvre, celebrating the visual power and intellectual rigour of Roy Lichtenstein’s work.

HELSINKI WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL 2012

HoopDoop approached the fine people leading the Helsinki World Design Capital-project to find out what makes Helsinki the perfect design destination. Senior Communications Officer Maarit Kivistö kindly answered our questions.

For a Helsinki day tripper, a true design enthusiast, where would you recommend them to visit?
There’s a lot to see and experience here, during and after the Design Capital year. One interesting option would be the following route, starting from the airport.
At Helsinki-Vantaa airport, I’d start by taking advantage of the Suvanto lounge and charge my mobile whilst enjoying the free wifi (http://www.helsinki-vantaa.fi/newsletter/newsletter-article?article=8827833).

Once at Helsinki center, I’d at least check out the following architectural sights:
- The Kamppi Chapel of Silence, a truly peaceful retreat in the middle of a bustling city (http://wdchelsinki2012.fi/en/program/2011-07-01/kamppi-chapel-silence)
- The new Helsinki university main library, called Kaisa house (http://wdchelsinki2012.fi/en/news/2012-09-05/kaisa-house-library-opened-doors-public).

ETHEREAL AMBIANCE

The best thing about being an artist is the ability to create something that otherwise didn’t exist, as an artist I like creating things that no one has ever seen before, things that make people pause and think or get lost in for awhile. I don’t have some sort of special formula I don’t really plan or brainstorm or even sketch out my ideas either I freestyle, I go with the flow. It’s like there’s an endless stream of random abstract shapes, ideas, sounds and imagery zipping through my mind like a thousand birds through the sky. I sample, shape, listen to and mold them all into art.

COVER STORY: MARIE CLAIRE LIEM

Hoop Doop meets Marie Claire Liem.
Interview by: Agnese Roda

MARIE CLAIRE LIEM : A story of freelance style!

How did it start?

When I was a young girl, I got from my parents, Modewijzer. I was drawing for everybody; it was a pretty stylish toy. During my old childhood, I was always fascinated by fashion. I was a lot into shopping and soon I realized I wanted to have a job to support my passion. Actually, I couldn’t wait to have job, and got the first one when I was 14, in a shoe store. I always dreamed about having a job in the fashion industry. I was playing in my room pretending I had my own clothing shop so I could style looks. I’ve also got loads of Barbie’s; I had the attic of my house only for them. It was my Barbie Land, I had more than 50. It was my fashion world. Later on, I got hooked up with styling thanks to a TV program, an interior design one with Jan De Bouvries. He had this show where he was saying to people he could have changed their house. I started practicing my drawings in front of the TV, waiting with pen and paper in my hands and drawing the best house styling with him. I was also pretty busy taking pictures of things that caught my attention. Improving and developing my eye, looking for details, learning to see things. Everywhere I could find something, from junky funky places, to very hip ones. I started collecting them too. [Read more...]
